Brianna L. Hernández – June 2022

We are excited about June Resident artist at Ma’s House – Brianna L. Hernández! Brianna is a Chicana artist, curator, educator, and death doula based on the Shinnecock Nation. Hernández serves as Board Secretary of Ma’s House and is currently the Curatorial Fellow at the Parrish Art Museum.

In developing as an artist, Brianna credits her late mother, Sylvia D. Hernández, as her most significant mentor and inspiration for the creativity, resilience, and compassion she demonstrated throughout her life. Through performative video art, immersive installations, and living sculptures, Hernández’s work expresses the complex layers of end-of-life care, the dying process, grief, and mourning rituals based on lived experiences, cultural research, and collaborations with others in the field. In addition to formal artworks, her practice offers workshops and informational resources for viewers to self-educate through the safety of the creative process.

As a curator, Brianna works with artists to make socially-charged topics publicly accessible to create opportunities for education and empathy. As an extension of this socially-conscious approach, Brianna often collaborates with community health researchers to incorporate the arts into collecting and disseminating public health project data.

Shinnecock, NY Ma’s House is also pleased to present a solo exhibition of June resident artist Brianna L. Hernández. “Beloved Arts will run from June 18th – July 1st, 2022, with an opening reception on Saturday, June 18th, from 5 – 7 pm.
