Sen Mendez – November 2023

Please join us in welcoming November Ma’s House resident artist Sen Mendez! Sen, aka Queen Sen Sen, is an Indigenous, non-binary, and fat artist, educator, and bachata dancer deeply rooted in the Huichin Ohlone Territory/Oakland, California. Sen is a self-taught artist, working primarily in printmaking, painting, and social practice. He prioritizes creating accessible and inclusive spaces to learn art for those without the resources and privileges to receive formal art education. Sen is an artist dedicated to affirming and highlighting bodies that are often made invisible in everyday life. Sen strives to celebrate these bodies through whimsical, colorful, and fun visual arts.

Sen is a recipient of the Homebody Fellowship for QTBIPOC artists based in the San Francisco Bay Area for the Artist Residency Program at Ma’s House. Three chosen artists will be awarded an unrestricted $500 during the residency, which spans 2-4 weeks at Ma’s House on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton, NY.

This opportunity is made possible by the Homebody Fund, a small donor-advised fund at East Bay Community Foundation, resourcing POC—especially QTPOC—spiritual/healing spaces that support community leadership and cultural transformation in decolonial movements for liberation, especially in the East Bay Area.
