Denise Silva-Dennis: In Beauty It Has Blossomed – A solo exhibition Feb 1st – Mar 10th 2022

Ma’s House is pleased to present a solo exhibition curated by Brianna Hernández of February resident Shinnecock artist Denise Silva-Dennis. “In Beauty It Has Blossomed“ will run from February 1st – March 1st, 2022, at Ma’s House. This exhibition will feature works spanning the artist’s career and disciplines. In addition, the artist will be hosting a beadwork workshop on Wednesday, February 2nd, from 5-7 pm, and unveiling new works at the opening reception on Saturday, February 12th, from 5-7 pm. Visitors are encouraged to meet the artist, Denise Silva-Dennis, now through February 15th, with visits by appointment only.
Denise “Weetahmoe” Silva-Dennis (Shinnecock/Hassanamisco-Nipmuc) is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator based in the Shinnecock Nation. Dennis is a retired Southampton Elementary art school teacher.
Denise Silva-Dennis graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art. Upon graduation, she received honors in her discipline. Silva-Dennis works primarily in acrylic for her figurative paintings. Her professional achievements include two paintings selected for the exhibit ‘In Beauty It Has Begun…’ sponsored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institute. She also won the Parrish Art Museum’s Judge’s Award in the painting category. Silva-Dennis is also an accomplished beadwork craftswoman. The traditional Eastern Woodland style of beadwork was handed down to her from her mother and elder women of Shinnecock and Hassanamisco-Nipmuc Nations. Her work includes mandala necklace and earring sets, beaded medicine fans, walking sticks, beaded cradleboards, beaded moccasins, and beaded crowns. Denise’s beadwork pieces and paintings have been shown at various art galleries, museums, libraries, schools, and colleges throughout Long Island and Upstate, Clinton, New York, at Hamilton College’s Bundy Center and Library.
“In Beauty It Has Blossomed“ is on view at Ma’s House from February 1st – March 10th, 2022 by appointment.
