Sequoyah Hunter-Cuyjet Artist Talk at Ma’s House

August 27 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Join us at Ma’s House on Tuesday, August 27th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM for an enlightening artist talk with Shinnecock artist and professor Sequoyah Hunter-Cuyjet. Sequoyah will share how her Shinnecock heritage has profoundly influenced her work as a designer and educator, incorporating indigenized ways of designing and teaching that emphasize storytelling, history, place, and nature.

She will discuss her master’s thesis ‘My Heart Belongs to Shinnecock,‘ which combines cultural preservation with economic development, and her current work at Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. Her piece is part of the current exhibit at Ma’s House, Shinnecock Speaks, on view by appointment now until September 7th.

During the event, Sequoyah will highlight her mentorship of a graduate thesis student whose project, [re] rural, addresses the revitalization of multi-generational rural communities, including envisioning new businesses on Shinnecock territory. This project provides region-specific solutions that reflect similar narratives across the globe. Sequoyah’s vision extends beyond mere survival, envisioning a future where Shinnecock thrives and leads with innovative and forward-thinking systems. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the intersection of cultural heritage and modern design practices with Sequoyah Hunter-Cuyjet.

Free to attend RSVP Required, open to the public.
