About the work

My practice investigates the process of how we as single beings, one self, encounter external reality, which then results in the interchanges between oneself and the other. The mysterious space where they reshape each other is where my painting resides. William Kentridge said, “What one is doing in one’s own studio doesn’t sound like the same question as what is happening in the country but very often they are the same question. ” In my studio, I think a lot about China, my family, my ancestors, our history, the struggles and turbulence. Therefore, my painting practice deals with specific conundrums constituted by the cultural environment of my upbringing. The paintings communicate my confusion and curiosity to understand the censored history of China and function as my attempt to understand how these historical events, government decisions, and social structures impacted my family, then the impact manifests itself in family dynamics shapes the individual experiences. I find my painting occupies a space of ambiguity and uncertainty, where the history of my land was hidden from me, where the comfort of familiarity disappears in the rapid changes, and where my self-image got lost in the conjunction of two cultures. The painting King of Wands reclaims the space to reflect my personal experiences formed by the plurality of my sociocultural environment.
