About the work

My experience as a first-generation Guatemalan American inspires me to explore themes of labor, immigration, identity, and hybridity through works that mix non-traditional and familiar materials. I am driven to explore what it means to be a first-generation American and seek to document the complex experiences of those like my family who straddle multiple cultures, identities, and histories. In “Mucho Chingas Vos (You Play Too Much) I explore the intimate, private, and joyful moments that occur within my family’s home in Las Vegas, Nevada. In doing so I highlight the importance of representation and individuality that comes from growing up in a lower working-class immigrant household in the United States.

Henry Morales (b. 1993, Los Angeles, CA) received his Associates of Arts from the College of Southern Nevada in 2018 and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from The Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University in 2021. Previously, Morales has been awarded residencies at the Chautauqua School for Art and The Atlantic Center for the Arts. Morales was most recently the Post-Baccalaureate Fellow for the Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities at Haverford College from 2021-2023.
