About the work

Afrofuturism can best be described as people of African descent envisioning themselves in a future that includes them as integral components of society.  Perhaps not just integral members but the actual leaders of their worlds rather than having been erased from history.  This vision of themselves may also reach back in time and may cross geographic, societal, political, and racial boundaries.  The futurist visionaries of one hundred years ago would have had different yet conceivably similar ideas of how African-descended peoples would be living today.  We are now living in their future.

Currently on view at Ma’s House as part of Coalescence, a solo exhibition of paintings by Michael A. Butler, May 5th – June 27th, 2024

Michael A. Butler is an artist, historian, humanitarian who continues to leave his mark on Sag Harbor. As a self-taught artist, Butler’s preferred medium is acrylic on canvas although at times he may incorporate various other media to complete a work. Butler has been on the board of the Eastville Community Historical Society for over 20 years, serving as president, vice president, and recording secretary. He is also the chairperson of the St. David AME Zion Church cemetery, a member of East Hampton’s Anti-Bias Task Force, a lifetime member of the NAACP, as well a former board member of the East End AIDS Wellness Project and a former member of the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreation Center.
