About the work
Ushpomuonk presents the sacred burial site on Sugar Loaf Hill, which was recently purchased to be preserved and returned to the Shinnecock. Silva-Dennis states, “The pine trees feel as though they guard where our ancient ancestors were buried. The scattered junipers seem like figures standing strong.” The spirit figures in the clouds depict prominent Shinnecock leaders who knew of the sacred burial site. We see Louis Marie Hunter (Princess Nowedonah), Oliver Kellis, Wickham Cuffees, and Justine Kellis from left to right.
Denise Silva-Dennis is a multi-media artist, educator, and Workshop Coordinator at Ma’s House, and Loretta (Ma) Silva’s daughter who eventually raised her own children in their family home turned museum.
