About the work

“Coalescence: Stories & Visions of the East End” is a solo-exhibition featuring Sag Harbor artist and historian Michael A. Butler. Describing his work as “narrative folk” or “intuitive”, the paintings on view offer windows into the past through historical imagery and imagined realities of the future. Inspiration for his pictorial stories derive from mythology, biblical and religious references, and more recently, the forgotten history of the East End’s Indigenous and/or enslaved populations. Throughout his works, Butler draws upon the magical dream-like state that exists within and around us to bring his paintings to life.

Currently on view at Ma’s House as part of Coalescence, a solo exhibition of paintings by Michael A. Butler, May 5th – June 27th, 2024
